Although the ladders that made up Transcend2010 have all been returned, the project continues to affect us all deeply in our faith, our relationships with each other and our relationships with the community.  Please keep your eyes and ears open for details on a photo book of the project we’re publishing this fall – it’s an amazing and powerful story of transcendence and transformation that you’ll want to share with others.

Transcend2010: Where are we going, and how will we get there together?

Transcend2010 was a temporary sculpture made of ladders lent by hundreds of individuals, families, organizations and businesses from throughout the surrounding community, built on the grounds of First Presbyterian Church of St. Louis. The ladders (with large tags identifying lenders) leaned on each other and tied together to form a metaphor for the community – dependent on all of its individual members holding on to each other and rising up together to form a colorful, complex structure.

Sculptor Charlie Brouwer completed the project on Sept. 11, 2010. The sculpture was in place until Oct. 7, when it was taken down and the ladders returned to their owners.

Feel free to visit the site of the sculpture anytime from dawn to dusk, meditate, and walk the labyrinth underneath, and imagine the hundreds of ladder lenders and their thoughts and prayers that were represented here.

ART ON LOAN: Accompanying Transcend2010 on our lawn, Charlie has made a generous gift of his sculpture “Higher Thoughts” to First Presbyterian Church. It will remain installed it on the front lawn of the church to help us remember the project. See Charlie talk about the installation of “Higher Thoughts.”

ABOUT THE ARTIST: Charlie Brouwer is an award-winning sculptor from Willis, Virginia. His work has appeared in juried exhibitions and installations across the U.S., in Europe and Australia. He creates both indoor and outdoor sculptures drawing on his experiences with memory, family, nature and life. Learn more about Charlie and see examples of his work on his website.
